The Universitas Sumatera Utara Dental and Oral Hospital (RSGM USU) continues to expand access to oral healthcare through cross-institution collaboration. On Thursday, 12 February 2026, RSGM USU, the Faculty of Dentistry USU (FKG USU), and the Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia conducted a Community Dental Service at RSGM USU under the theme “Together We Can: Improving the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life of the Elderly and Children with Special Needs.” The program involved community foundations and families of children with Down syndrome as part of a public service initiative to improve oral health and quality of life.

Care for 48 Children: Safe, Comfortable, and Well-Directed

During the program, 48 children with special needs received dental care at RSGM USU. The Director of RSGM USU, drg. Siti Salmiah, Sp.KGA., Subsp.KKA(K), also participated directly as a sign of institutional support for community-oriented care.

Clinical procedures included:

  • Tooth extractions (based on indication)

  • Scaling/tartar removal

  • Dental fillings

In addition to clinical treatment, families received oral health education to support daily home care—an essential part of long-term outcomes.
