The establishment of the USU Dental and Oral Hospital (RSGM USU) is inseparable from the history of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FKG USU), which initially began with the establishment of the Dental Clinic on October 4, 1965. This clinic later changed its name to the FKG USU Dental Care Center (Balai Pengobatan Gigi FKG USU). To meet the essential requirements as an institution offering the Professional Dental Education Program, the name was officially changed to the Dental and Oral Hospital (RSGM) FKG USU in 2002, following the issuance of a Temporary Operating License on June 27, 2002, based on a Decree from the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. In 2005, RSGM FKG USU obtained a Permanent Operating License issued by the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. In 2018, the management of RSGM FKG USU was officially transferred to Universitas Sumatera Utara, which holds Legal Entity State University (PTNBH) status, and the institution was renamed RSGM USU.

The establishment of RSGM FKG USU was a development from the previous form of service, namely a dental care center. The existence of RSGM FKG USU aligns with national regulations, particularly Law No. 20 of 2013 concerning Medical Education, which mandates that professional dental education must be conducted in an educational Dental and Oral Hospital.

RSGM USU has the most complete team of dental specialists in the Sumatra region, consisting of four oral surgeons, five specialists in conservative dentistry, six orthodontists, five periodontists, six prosthodontists, three pediatric dentists, one specialist in oral medicine, one specialist in dental radiology, and one forensic odontologist. RSGM USU also has comprehensive facilities, including an Emergency Department, inpatient wards, central surgery installation, CSSD unit, outpatient clinics, and an executive clinic.

Currently, RSGM USU offers professional education services provided by students of the professional dental program under the supervision of qualified attending dentists (DPJP), specialist education services delivered by students of the specialist dental education program (PPDGS), and professional services performed by leading dental specialists in the North Sumatra region.

RSGM USU provides flagship services through its executive clinic, including holistic craniomaxillofacial deformity care, dental implants, ocular prostheses, myofunctional therapy, fixed orthodontic treatment, aesthetic care, including internal and external bleaching, complex endodontic treatments, endodontic surgery, vital pulp therapy, exceptional care dentistry for children with special needs, and pediatric esthetic services.

The Dental and Oral Hospital of Universitas Sumatera Utara (RSGM USU) is a specialized hospital owned by Universitas Sumatera Utara that serves as a center for educating professional dental students and dental specialists. This role aligns with the university's core mission of Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi — Education, Research, and Community Service. The presence of RSGM is inseparable from FKG USU, as both institutions complement and depend on each other. In line with evolving regulations and increasing emphasis on patient safety, RSGM USU continues to transform — not only fulfilling its educational role for clinical and resident students but also striving to develop high-quality, professional, and excellent services, positioning itself as a referral center for dental and oral health services across Sumatra and supporting the hospital's operational independence.
